I — May to October

Halibut

May to October is known as the big months for halibut. The winter months, November through March, are closed for halibut fishing — so if halibut is what you came for, plan inside that window.

II — May to August

Chinook

May to August offers the best of the chinook fishing. It overlaps the halibut months, which is why most people who only get one day out here take it somewhere in that stretch.

III — June to October

Coho

Coho run from June through October. The large hook-nose northerns arrive mid-August, and that is the part of the season worth arranging your trip around if coho is the target.

IV — When the day suits it

Harbour days

Wildlife viewing on the run out and back, and Dungeness crabbing in Rupert harbour. Not every day on this coast is a hard-fishing day, and that is no bad thing.

V — Sizes

What a halibut weighs

20 – 50 lb

The average size for a Prince Rupert halibut. A good honest fish, and plenty of it.

290 lb

Captain Steve’s big halibut for 2005, weighed in at 290 lb. Some days the average does not apply.
